What is a faucet aerator, and how does it help with water consumption?
Simply quoted, aeration is the process of infusing air into any material. Now, when we talk about tap aerators, these devices help to mix air with water to reduce the volume of water coming out of the taps without altering the pressure.
These water saving devices have small mesh screens that divide the flow of water into multiple small streams by adding air in between. Also, as the output area is fixed, the flow is reduced, resulting in water savings.
To use, simply attach this device to the end of the tap, insert it into an existing spout, or have your plumber install it for you.
Aerators function just like a sieve, dividing a single stream into multiple streams with air infused in them. As long as the pressure is maintained, a user will not be able to tell much difference between normal flow and the aerated flow.
How much water is conserved with an aerator?
Aerators are seen to reduce water consumption from 70 percent to 90 percent, depending on the variant used. Faucet aerators can reduce a normal flow rate of 15 litres per minute to 3 lpm.
You can buy pre-fitted faucets with aerators or simply aerators and install them in your existing taps.
How to choose an aerator for your needs
A male aerator has threads on the outside of the aerator, while a female aerator has the threads on the inside of the aerator. If your faucet has threads on the outside, then you should choose a “female” aerator. And if it had threads on the inside, then you should use a “male” aerator.
Depending upon the flow, common variants of aerators available on the market are mist flow (same as mist spray), laminar flow (non-splashing solid stream), and aerated flow (usual flow water mixed with air). Shower aerators are also available.
